Abstract
Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the public¡¯s awareness of spontaneous adverse drug events (ADEs) reporting system and their related factors.

Methods: A computer assisted telephone interview survey using the standardized questionnaire was done for the adults (19-69 years old) living in Korea between 31th October 2011 and 8th November 2011. A total of 1,000 study subjects were selected using stratified cluster random sampling according to their age, sex, and residence area. The questionnaire included sociodemographic characteristics, awareness of spontaneous reporting system, and strategies for activating the awareness of the system.

Results: Total awareness of spontaneous ADEs reporting system was 17.3% (subject who knew about ADEs reporting system constituted 11.4% and other 5.9% heard about ADEs reporting system) among general population. Those who knew about the spontaneous ADEs reporting system got their information from major broadcasting media (70.6%), internet (17.9%), hospital (11.9%), and pharmacy (6.2%). Lower education level, lower average monthly household income, and higher age group showed higher awareness of spontaneous ADEs reporting system. After learning about the spontaneous ADEs reporting system, 91.9% agreed on the necessity of the system.

Conclusion: To overcome the low awareness of the system, continued publicity activities through mass media or internet will be required.
